All Kenyan coffee is graded primarily by screen size (a measure of the size of the bean, larger being higher grade; i.e. “18 screen” means the beans will not pass through a screen with holes that are 18/64 of an inch wide) immediately after milling; it then proceeds to the weekly auction at the Nairobi Coffee Exchange. The AB Grade has a screen size of 15/16 . After screen size, there are two general quality distinctions:
Kibirigwi Farmers’ Co-operative Society
Kibirigwi farmers’ co-operative society is in Kirinyaga County and was founded in 1953 with 300 members. The founder ‘factory’ (wet mill) is Ragati factory which also serves as the head office.
Climate & Landscape:
- Kibirigwi has a total of 8 wet mills and membership of 11,500.
- The other wet mills are Nguguini, Kiangai, Kibingoti, Thunguri, Kianjege and Chema.
- Kirinyaga County is on the slopes of Mount Kenya the second highest mountain in Africa and is home to the Agikuyu people the largest ethnic community in Kenya.
- Kibirigwi is at an altitude of 1850 meters above sea level and the farms are characterized by red deep volcanic loam soils (typical for the area).
